Herniated Discs

Herniated Discs

The spine consists of several bones (called vertebrae) that are stacked on each other. They are separated by discs that cushion the spine and aid in mobility. Discs consist of a strong nucleus fibrosus layer that surrounds and contains a softer nucleus pulposus. A herniated or ruptured disc refers to a condition where there is a break in the lining of the nucleus fibrosus and the inner nucleus pulposus is pushed outward beyond its boundary.
